Why Choose? I'm taking some down time from Cross Country mountain bik
e racing to do some of my other favorite things while they're in season. Currently, I am competing in my 3rd year of high school Cross Country running. This is my first year training as Varsity (you have to be one of the Top 10 guys). However, I will race some races as JV, because I am not top 7 Varsity. My coach will decide which races I will race JV, and which ones I will race Varsity. So far this season, we are doing awesome. Yesterday both our Boys Varsity and our Girls Varsity won a very big invitaional meet, and I medaled for the first time in JV at the opening meet!! Our team has a rigorous training program, and some very good and dedicated coaches.
While I am doing this, I am also training to get ready for our local cyclocross s
eason. The new Grammo Paru disc brake CX bikes are going to be awesome. Part of the reason that I am so stoked about the new disc brake design is because before, with cantiliever brakes, I never felt like I could actually brake. This was because I often felt they had a huge lack of power and control in high speed, muddy conditions. This greatly affected my high speed cornering, which will hopefully get much faster and smoother. I love CX, and this seaon will be a ton of fun. I was out working on one of the courses for the Sac CX series on Sunday, and I've gotta say, it's gonna be a sick race. Super awesome venue and course, everyone who shows up is in for a treat.
I am also catching the end of the downhill season. DH is one of my favorite disiplines of riding.
The speed, the jumps, the split second reactions, the skill, I just love it. And yes, I do know that I say this about almost anything on a bike. But I really mean it!! I'm very excited for my first DH race at Northstar later this month. Trying to fit all of these different activities, along with 3 yearlong AP courses, is quite the balancing act. I've had a bunch of conflicting race days, and that is always frustrating. Even so, I am having a blast doing all of these fun things. As I said in my last blog, it is often important to take a break from your main sport and have fun with other disciplines. I am certainly acheiving this now, and I am already looking forward to the start of next Cross Country Mountain bike season. Meanwhile, during this downtime from XC MTB, I am as busy as ever. I'll keep you posted!
